Chapter 9

Dr Primus swore. “Can’t we just wake up?’

“We’re not sleeping! We need to follow our cords back and now there are too many spirits tangled around them!” Nigel gestured to their cords, now buried beneath a thick layer of vegetation. The plants didn’t have the power to sever them, but they could still make things very, very difficult. The wererat professor swung around as several lianas tried to grab him and wrap themselves around his enormous furry shoulders. He grabbed them and ripped them free. “We have to do this the hard way and fight our way out of here! Come on!” He darted into the gap he’d occupied.

Muriel saw no reason to pussy-foot around. She shifted to mist form. “Sorry Kim! But these trees need some serious pruning!” She worked up a multiple-volley Fireball spell and fired a series of small but very hot orbs into the massing plant-life. They excavated a smouldering tunnel. Only their silvery cords remained, unaffected by their own enchantments.

“Keep it up!” Nigel charged forward, flexing his massive claws.

Unfortunately the heat didn’t keep the plants back for long. They started to surge forward, and spikes half a metre long exploded up through the floor, nearly skewering Mal. He tried to dodge and stumbled. Kim grabbed him and with a truly mortified expression on her face, she formed one arm into a spear and jabbed it into the closest tree.

She expected clear sap to run from its wound. What poured out was black and rotten, like the darkness she’d seen flow from her in the dream.

Or like the dark vomit that had come out of Mal!

The tree spirit stumbled back and Kim propelled a shocked Mal out of the way. “Change into mist and move it!”

With a dreadful creak a massive root as thick as an anaconda dropped from the ceiling and coiled around Nigel. He dug his claws in trying to yank it from him but even his formidable were strength couldn’t budge it. Roots started to surge from the ground to trap his back legs.

Mal had done as Kim had suggested and shifted to mist. But could he still cast spells like Dr Primus? Didn’t that require metal shaping or something? He flexed his ethereal fingers and worked up a manabolt spell to blast at the roots trying to tangle around Dr Ashe, but he couldn’t feel the mana bending to his will.

Blast, I need mental shaping. Well, maybe I can do something else with my mind. He spotted the contorted face of the tree-spirit holding Nigel, slowly dragging his massive body down to the ground, and slammed it with a telepathic blast. He felt his power smash through a crude but thick mental shield and blast across a mind of complete darkness.

The plant faltered and Dr Ashe chose that moment to go completely and utterly berserk. His eyes narrowed and turned red. Then with a mighty roar he reared back, ripping the enormous roots free. Swinging his sword-like talons he charged forward, slashing left, right and centre.
